It is rather amusing that Greece stood up to Xerxes, and has now conquered the world with the Olympic Games. It has put an enormous financial strain on every nation that hosts these games. I am sure there can be a common fund to operate a 'Commonwealth Games' with. Besides, there are plenty of stadiums built, can't they just be done up a bit every year?
The other thing I think is ridiculous is how much footballers get paid, and how much their transfer fees are. My Husband has been a West Ham supporter all his life. Men need their clubs, and clans, it's just the way they are made.
My Husband was a Round Tabler as well, and now we enjoy our 41 club. Especially twinning with our friends. It is Rotarians who set up the shelter box initiative. To be honest if someone doesn't have time for a family life, and normal activities with ordinary like minded people, they lose touch with reality. My Husband was Chairman of Jersey Round Table in his time, and he is just going to be taking up the diplomatic role in 41 club. There is only our twinning to organise this year I think.
I remember we went to Mombasa for a couple of holidays, I think I might have mentioned this, but through Round Table we got invited to the Harry Laaka Clinic opening. (I think that's the spelling, sorry we still have the pennent somewhere tucked away). I met this beautiful lady, who invited me to share a meal at her home, while my Husband went to the Table meeting.
We also got to meet with Ken Matiba, as our friend's son knew her from Nairobi. We met outside church, and Mrs Matiba invited us for coffee. It was wonderful. I am just an ordinary person, and I got to meet some incredible people through just saying hello. I think I must have sat there looking like a gawping twit, I was so awed by what Mr Matiba got through, what an inspiration. I found him a good man, and who knows what stability he may have brought to Kenya. Perhaps as he is not so well, His son may be a 'chip off the old block' and try for reforms as well.
