Thankfully we have advanced weather forecasts, and satellites to help us understand the potential path these storms may take and an opportunity to save many people before the storms arrive. Thank goodness the nuclear facilities in Florida are shutting down. It is going to be devastating.
I can't imagine how the infrastructure can be salvaged. The prayer and hope that I have is that although property may be lost, human and animal life may be spared. The animals must be terrified.
One of the things I have worried about for a long time is how much water has been pumped from aquifers and how it has changed the salinity and temperature of the oceans. Coupled with the plastics dispersed in the water my hunch is this is one of the main drivers for climate change, rising sea levels and more intense storms.
In the Bible the description of the flood was caused when God 'opened the floodgates of the deep'. I always thought this was underground water. It has taken millennia to accumulate this water, and due to pumping these reservoirs away we are causing this flood condition to occur.
Areas of water are becoming more salty and others less salty. The whole weather patterns are altering to make dry places dryer, and wet places wetter. Also the higher the ocean temperature is the more powerful storms we will have.
We rely too much on corn and cereals grown with irrigation from these aquifers. I am sure this is to feed beef production, as well as human consumption. Perhaps the farming mix must be altered.
If we want to eat so much beef, and crops that need irrigation where there is not sufficient rainfall then we will further accelerate this process. The next consideration is the amount of dairy and beef farming contributes to enormous CO2. It's a no brainier really.
It isn't that there is a shortage of food at all, we just need to change our diets. Respect that meat farming is intensive and damaging to the environment in the quantities some countries consume it. We would all be more healthy with less meat and more legumes. At least dried beans can be stored almost indefinitely. Most green veg can be grown hydroponically in automated towers, which would also conserve water, and avoid over production.
As humanity we have critical choices to make, we need to embrace sustainability rather than profit. We need to move away from using the Earth's resources to creating our own with modern technology and creativity. We need to conserve rather than squander before it's too late.
We definitely need to address the problems caused by the oceans warming due to plastics, their entry into the food chain, and their decomposition poisoning the oceans.
The oceans themselves can provide us with hydropower, food, seaweed farming for fuels, bioplastics, medicines. It will also mean they are our biggest resource instead of our biggest garbage repository.
I pray that we can be woken up from this nightmare before it's true magnitude is irreversible.
May God protect all in the path of this super hurricane.
