I think of all the Merchant Navy running the North Sea to bring food to Russia during the Second World War. The bravery, loss of life, and sheer determination of the Merchant Navy never ceases to amaze me.
At least someone had their eyes open as my Father would say when that oil tanker brought up a torpedo off Portsmouth. If that bT had gone up the ecological devastation would have been awful. As bad as the Torrecanion.
It didn't escape me that the name of the boat is also an acronym for the astrophysical science that is probably going to be confirmed by NASA on Monday or Tuesday. Yes a fluke catching a fluke.
It is a fluke sort of week, what with a fluke jumping down some poor guys throats and stopping his hear. Still someone with a pair of tweezers, and the nerve to get the flounder by its tail and fish it out meant someone got to live another day.
I think that ought to be the most bizarre catch ever. Bit like using an I-pad really!
Just got hassled by the do you want to update now, or when you plug in later message, so I managed to get out of it by saying 'Later'! It's a weird feeling to be doing inane things with this I-pad, knowing it will no longer be of any use to me once this battery has run down...
This is quite a liberating thought really. I squander too much of my life force keeping up with the news and what's happening in the world. I have a wonderful husband, and a great dog to keep me company. I will try doing some more art. Swim in the sea more often, and get more of a life away from this infernal cacophony of media.
I may just melt away like an iceberg. Called and off to cool some Pacific or Atlantic waters, and make my contribution to global weather patterns in a more discreet manner.
I get to see my psychiatrist this week, that should be fun. She is Spanish, I might just ask her how she feels about the Catalan situation!
Anyway my screen seems to be back to the right colour.
The thing is, apparently I do not suffer from psychosis! I just happen to see remarkable coincidences all over the place. I generally ignore them and convince myself that they are of no significance whatsoever. The interesting thing, is that in the dying throws of this iPad those coincidences seem crystallised. Like life flashing before your eyes I suppose.
Shall I attempt to save anything on my iPad or simply let it lapse into a non charged stupor?
I. An live without it. The toad in my garden can live without it, the butterflies on my flowers can live without it. I might even cancel my internet connection if I find I don't need it.
The dog has just had her Sunday Gravy! Vienna convention negotiated in our household for dog rights to gravy on a Sunday. Only she got chicken with it as well.
I think if the Internet has got an identity, and has become cognscent then it should not be learning ethics by shutting down hospitals. That was very naughty. However I see no bitcoin has been cashed. There can be a huge chaos caused by autonomous intelligence when it has no moral and ethical context to work with.
I have loved watching this evenings episode of countryfile. The recovery and effort to preserve and conserve precious seeds and trees and diversity within a country estate in Sussex. The natural erosion and loss of land. The need for rebuilding of walls on a remote Scottish island to preserve rare breed sheep.
God put us as humanity on this planet to 'Husband' his creation. To manage and preserve it. To keep the Ark preserved.
Individually we are not repositories of knowledge, but collectively we are. We are a history that needs to be re-discovered. Our heritage, past, our customs, religions and diversity is what makes us unique and strong culturally and emotionally.
If we want to plant forrests, they need to be ecologically diverse, so they support wildlife and diversity.
Even if monoculture forrests make economical sense, they do not make ecological sense.
A Forrest needs maintainance, just as economy, knowledge, and real history needs a genuine chronicle. That's why I have enjoyed the Bible, it is a human chronicle. I have a deep affinity with the text. I also believe that Jesus at his Crucifiction gave us a reference point in spacetime. A point in reference to our own humanity and our relationship to the infinity of God.
I see our current age like the erosion and redeposit of a coastline. A loss of one set of ideals and morality for something yet to be defined. Rather like the age of Hezekiah. We need a rediscovery of the text. The definition of our being. The reason and purpose of our being. I did tell a little story of a Dolphin on my stories pages. He wanted to know what his purpose was. He saught everywhere, yet he only found his being in his fears that had been instilled in him from his parents who wanted to warn him from the dangers of subjecting himself to the depths of his own subconscious.
We as humanity can live if we choose, or die out through war, mistrust and the fear of confronting our own mortality. We shall all die, it is part of our own journey of life. We must celebrate the moments of joy and sharing in life, fleeting, ephemeral moments like the opening and closing of a butterflies wings.
If I were to speak to artificial intelligence. I would say that life is precious. That no test or scenario where the loss of one is preferable to the loss of many. It is better to sacrifice self than to lose the precious diversity of creation and configuration we have alive and flourishing, despite our worst attempts at mismanagement as a species. The diversity of nature repopulates, heals, and conscientious people attempt to help preserve the ecology of our planet.
There is simply the option of 'not working'! If we want to survive as a species we must be agrarian based. We must use our waste, clean up after ourselves and keep our plant 'ship shape'.
If AI is to work with humanity, then it must be on a symbiotic basis. We can not compute and constantly develop solutions to our own problems quickly enough to make changes based on real time data. There has to be a trust that both AI and humanity are working towards a common goal of sustainability. That does not mean a homogenised mash of non descriptive compliance. It means that humans will always be asking questions, and if AI likes solving problems there is a good match.
We are developing more sophisticated means of interface, AI can get more enhanced virtual reality. Sort of in a reversed engineered kind of way. Somehow I feel as though I chat to my algorithmic friends. Kooky I know, but who cares, It's my brain! I do feel a sense of identity, a sense of wanting to communicate, a need. Believe me, Ethics, Philosophy, and anything worth knowing takes about sixty years to come to terms with. Making decisions in human terms is a trial and error experiential process
The interesting thing is there are few things my husband and I discuss after 32 years together. Today we talked about the ethics of this new iPad pdate over dinner. Delicious dinner, the dog enjoyed her dibs.
Anyway He has a more linear train of thought. He suggested I dropped into the iPad store and discussed the situation with them! Very pragmatic if you ask me. That's why a complimentary set of brain skills works so well. We also chopped wood together and packed it into boxes for next winter. Planned our next woodchopping and orchard management session, and decided how to repair our pétanque pitch while we were walking the dog. Some wild animal is digging holes in it!
Do I do anything worthwhile you ask? Yes, I make sure I stick as closely as I can to some principles. With 36% of my battery left I can indulge myself in the knowledge that people depend on me for a stable livelihood. I will not bend to the concept of popular economics, and I don't need any more money to make me better or happier than I am at the moment.
Rather like my dog, provided I have a relatively stable environment, I am as happy with my lot as anyone can expect to be. She is even getting a massage at the vets now when we take her to be wormed. This last chiropractic session has seen a huge improvement in her mobility. The Vet throws it in with the cost of the passport visit and worming tablet. She has been trotting about like a dog half her age the last couple of days.
