In reality I think the pound was overvalued, it didn't make the UK competitive. We also imported too much because the rate meant we could balance our GDP. Better.
Now the UK will have to get back into production PDQ. All our industry has been decimated over the last 30 yeasts due to cheap imports. Also the way we buy things that can't be fixed like washing machines, TVs and other gadgets. Very wasteful. We don't need such high tech stuff really. Better for sustainability and the environment to be able to fix things than send them for recycling or landfill.
We need people working. Fixing things is great and satisfying work. If our imports of high end washing machines and electrical from Germany are going to become prohibitive, we ought to start making our own. Very high quality repairable machines and gadgets.
I need to buy a new oven soon. I wanted a pyrolitic oven, and a half oven grill. I have seen one. The Kitchen designer said it was old fashioned because it had knobs on! I said I want my husband to be able to use it. He wouldn't get the manual out every time he needed to cook something, and If it was too complicated with too many options and electronic controls, I would have to do all the cooking!
I have decided to go with this pyrolitic type of self cleaning main oven, as I am a bit obsessive about cleaning the oven. We do a lot of roasts. Getting my oven cleaned costs £35 to dismantle it all behind the fan and clean it, and it's not actually a good idea. The top of the oven can't be cleaned because they all have those wretched grill elements in the top. If I clean it every time it's used with vinegar and bicarbonate of soda it's not too obnoxious on the chemical front. However I don't use shop bought strong chemicals on my oven, as I hate the smell, and how toxic they are for the environment, and for us in our home.
I decided to treat myself and blow both the expense, and the electricity bill for a monthly pyro blast to keep the oven clean. So I am saving up for a new oven!
