I love this poem.
I just found this great link: http://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/jsource/Judaism/bedtime.html
These are wonderful prayers to teach a child. They may not understand them completely when they are young, but they just get saturated with them as they grow up, and remember your voice saying it to them all their lives.
When I have been in deepest fear and dread, I have always found myself 'walking through' the 23rd Psalm. I also find myself living in the Lord's Prayer, and to keep my mind from being completely muddled up, I use the Nicene Creed.
One of the old children's prayers my Grandmother said with me was Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, Bless the bed that I lie on. Then I simply commit myself to the Lord Jesus and hold his hand.
For Christians you can go to the page on Orthodox Icons to see what pictures I (wrote) Michael and Gabriel look like. Makes me sound like Ernie Wise, but this is the correct word.
(I think that the Moslem faith allows Angels to look after you when you are sleeping too, so there must be a theologically correct way of translating this).
Michael is very responsible and looks after you very well when you are asleep, and Gabriel is a bit shy, but loves having fun and games and teaches you all sorts of things. They always keep you safe, and nothing can hurt you when you are sleeping. If you have ever watched 'The Snowman' sleeping is a bit like this. Even If you find you don't sing too well here when you are awake, this is how you get to sing when you are asleep.
Sweet dreams and peaceful sleep, and when you wake up God has got great things for you to do.
